Earth Hour 2008

Please join me in participating in Earth Hour 2008.

Worth the paper it's printed on?

Husband received a letter from a credit card company yesterday. The letter reads
" We learned during a recent review of our system that your closed account was incorrectly charged a finance charge on a promotional offer. We are taking immediate steps to correct the error in full. This check represents a refund of that finance charge."
Accompanying the letter was a check for one cent. Yes you read correctly, they sent us a check for a penny.
I showed it to husband and his response was " I'll try not to spend it in one spot."
I hope this wasn't the windfall my horoscope promised me.

Coast trip part 2

The area that we visited has a series of three lakes, two that are large and one that is small. I know the area very well because I explored it every day for several Summers.

When I was ten or eleven my dad moved to the coast and opened a windsurfing shop. During the Summer months I would go there and live with him.

I can remember helping him set up for lessons on the lake shore. While he was giving instructions on how to tack I would be whipping around the lake on my board.

It was any childs dream, spending the Summer on the beach and lakes.

Some days I spent riding my bike through the miles and miles of trails that meander around the lakes and campgrounds.

I can't imagine letting a child do that now but back then I would be gone for hours on end, meeting other kids that came to camp, swimming and sliding down sand dunes.

Those Summers are some of my favorite memories and I want to share a little of that experience with Bug.

On the afternoon of our second day Bug was napping so I left him and the husband at camp and set out on my bicycle.

As I turned onto the first trail all of the memories of that time in my childhood flooded back.

Not much about the area has changed, the vegetation that lines the trails is tall and thick.

The Sand dune has moved further into the lake since when I was young.

I remember on hot days sliding down it and then splashing into the water. It is too cold for swimming this time of year.
After I took some pictures it started to rain on me so I had to high tail it back to the RV.

The next day was beautiful, so I took Bug on the trails with me. He just learned how to ride without training wheels and was a little uncomfortable on the narrow trails.

Here is where you will find out how much of a dork I am. Just the week before I was telling Bug about an insect eating plant that I used to see on the coast. My husband thought I was nuts when I found some growing in a bog next to the shore, I got so excited showing it to Bug. I'm almost as excited showing this picture to you now.

Darlingtonia Californica or Pitcher Plant.

After our ride we headed back out to the beach, this time it was beautiful blue skies.

Bug and hubby built a sand castle while I walked the dogs and took some pictures.

Bug had fun rolling down some sand dunes.

Once we were done, it was time to go home and back to reality.

If only life was always like a day at the beach.

Our trip to the Coast Part 1

Before I start about our coast trip I just want to say thanks to everyone for their good thoughts. I hate putting things out there that I can't discuss, but it isn't my story so it isn't my place to discuss it here. All I can say is that someone I love very much is in a fight for their life. Luckily my family is very positive and we are surrounding her with our love and support.

As we headed out of town Friday we knew that there was a limited amount of time before the weather turned. The sky was clear as we left our driveway but by the time we passed over the hills and through the tunnel we could see storm clouds brewing on the horizon.
We were not deterred. We were determined to make the best of it. We pulled the RV into a camping spot at the state park and just as we got everything set up, it began to rain. Not just any rain, it began to pour.
Still optimistic we jumped into the Jeep and headed to town. On the way we drove down to the beach. There wasn't a soul in sight as my husband got out to attach the flag to the Jeep. For those that don't know, you have to have a flag when driving onto the sand so that other drivers can see you coming.
We assessed the dune in front of us and the likely hood of making it over without airing down our tires. The husband made a run for it and we bounced our way up and over the top. I quickly realized as we descended the beach side that it was much steeper and longer than the side we had just come up. I didn't say a word, I didn't want to sound to whiny and pessimistic.
The beach was deserted except for some hearty little birds that scurried along the sand and took to the wind. The rain was coming down hard, but I was able to snap some shots from inside the Jeep.

When I was done taking pictures I turned to the husband and said in my best optimistic voice " Maybe we should try going back over the dune now, before it gets dark."

"Good idea" He said and I held my breath as we headed back to the dune. As we made it back up and over the top without a hitch we all let out a "Hooray!" and I sighed with relief.

We made it to town, got a movie and headed back to the RV. Bug, Husband and I played a round of "Sponge Bob Square pants LIFE" and called it a day.

The next morning there were bouts of rain and sun. We headed up the coast to watch Sea Lions in a large cave.

An elevator takes you two hundred feet down into a damp and stinky (very stinky) cave. There is a small viewing place were you look through wire fencing and down on hundreds of female Stellar Sea Lions. Bug was so excited about it all, he listened as the husband read the informative signs throughout the cave.

When we emerged from the cave the weather was beautiful.

We headed up the coast some more to a small beach with a light house on the cliffs above.

It was cold and we were tired, so after I took several pictures we headed back. Next time I'll tell you about my history with the area and the rest of our trip.

The quirky side of meme

Huckdoll tagged me with the six quirks meme, and I have lot's of quirks so...

The Six Quirks

1) Post the rules on your blog.

2) Share six non-important things/habits/quirks about yourself.

3) Tag at least three people at the end of your post.

4) Let each person know they have been tagged by leaving a comment on their blog.

5) Let the fun begin.

Here we go:

1. When my husband says something annoying I flutter my eye lids. It's involuntary and usually he will say "Oh stop fluttering your eyes at me!" LOL.

2. I can't stand the sight of blood, I wanted to be a veterinarian but when I was ten I fainted after watching our vet cut open an abscess on one of our horses.

3. I don't spend loose change, I bring it all home and put it into a just for fun jar. When it's full I use it for something fun.

4. I grind my teeth in my sleep. It's so bad that some mornings I wake up and my jaw hurts. I have always done this and poor Bug does it too!

5. I am slightly claustrophobic. Not in small spaces but when I feel smothered by people. Too many people around me or sometimes if someone hugs me a little too tight. A feeling of panic comes over me.

6. I like having my toes pulled, I know it's wacky but it's like I need a chiropractic adjustment in my toes. It only works if someone else does it, my poor husband.

So I'm really tired from a long weekend and I can't think of who to tag so if you want to do this ... yay go ahead! Just let me know you did it so I can see how quirky you are!
